Although this wedding was simple in décor and detail, the selections that were made complemented one another to ensure that this couple had a wedding that was not only dramatic, but also resembled them. The TransAlta Arts Barns was a unique venue of choice. Ngan and Vinny had requested a ceremony site with large windows that would allow for a setting that glowed in natural light. They also wished for a reception venue that was avant-garde, somewhere their guests had not yet experienced. As they planned their wedding, alongside their wedding planner, they reminisced about special moments from their history together; one of these moments being their enthusiasm for karaoke. So, of course, they participated in a joyous evening filled with the crooning of their guests.

Ngan does not use the word “love” hastily. She takes time before she commits and this is true of her relationship with Vinny. The couple courted for twelve years (yes, you read it correctly!) and were introduced a few years prior. Ngan’s maid of honour had first introduced her to Vinny during their first year of schooling at the University of Alberta. After two years of longing, Vinny finally found the courage to ask Ngan to go on their first date and as we can see, she said yes!
The Proposal
Vinny knew immediately that Ngan was the love of his life, the woman whom he would dream of spending the rest of his life with. Earlier in their relationship, they agreed that they did not need to formalize their relationship through the act of marriage, but in due course they decided that they wished to be wed.
Prior to the couple’s trip to San Francisco, Vinny phoned Ngan’s father to request his blessing for his daughter’s hand in marriage. This story was touching and as Vinny relayed this story at the wedding reception, all of their guests had a tear in his or her eye. As a romantic and a family oriented individual, I am always touched by stories of grooms asking for a bride’s parent’s blessing; this is the most respectable and honourable action.
In a small park overlooking San Francisco Bay, Vinny finally proposed to Ngan.

What was your favourite moment of your wedding?
NGAN: The vows. A very close second were the toasts which were heartfelt and moving.
Do you have any advice for couples who are currently planning their wedding?
NGAN: Definitely hire a wedding planner! Our wedding planner was great to work with and she made the planning process seem effortless. In addition to all of the planning and valuable guidance that Rebecca provided as our wedding planner, we were able to enjoy our special day with family and friends, stress-free knowing that she was taking care of every little detail.

Did you go on a honeymoon? Where to and for how long? Tell us about it!
NGAN: Since we got married in the summer, we decided to wait until November (when the weather was colder in Edmonton) to take our honeymoon trip to Costa Rica. The honeymoon was fantastic! It was very easy to get around the country so we were able to travel to many destinations and have completely different experiences during our two week trip.
